When jogging by this house in Brookline, MA, I thought to myself, “what an odd Colonial Revival house”, while quickly snapping this photo. Upon further research, the home has an interesting history! It was built in 1896 for Thomas Aspinwall of the esteemed Aspinwall Family of the Boston area. Dr. Henry Aspinwall (1743-1823) built a house in 1803 in what is today the Aspinwall Hill area of Brookline at the corner of Gardner and Winthrop Roads. The massive Federal estate was later demolished for the development of the estate around the beginning of the 20th century. Nearly a century later, Aspinwall’s grandson hired the architectural firm of Ball and Dabney to design a contemporary replica of his grandfather’s home.
