Coleman House // c.1750

In 1802, a young sea captain, Laban Coleman purchased this house on Orange Street on Nantucket within a year of his marriage to Jane Carman. Historians estimate the date of construction of the house to be from sometime between 1729 and 1750, but it could date closer to the time that Coleman purchased the house from a joiner, Elisha Raymond, who possibly built the house. I particularly love the simple door with transom above and the narrow, second-story stairhall window. What do you like the most about this Nantucket home?

Thank you for your posting but believe some of your info is incorrect. There are 2 Laban Colemans this one born in 1774 and called a Carman (job)and married twice first to Lydia Bowcott producing 2 children and after her death to Sally Bunker with no children, he lived on Nantucket until his death in 1848, if he lived in this house he already had one child, have no info on him being a seaman. The second Laban, a descendent from Thomas Coleman one of Nantucket’s original settlers, was born 1777,died in 1864,moved from Nantucket around 1800 with his family to Ghent NY and was married to Jane Carman, having five children no surviving grandchildren. I will also mention these Colemans were devout Quakers. All of these Colemans are probably related. All of this info comes from researching a beautiful Hepplewhite style clothes press made by Laban Coleman around 1810 and passed thru his family until 2006 when I acquired it. Thank you
