Another of the absolutely stunning 18th century homes in Portsmouth I stumbled upon in my recent walk there is this late-Georgian home, built in 1780 and owned by Ebenezer Lord. Lord worked as a cabinetmaker and produced many fine pieces of furniture, many of which are sold today for high values at auction. Due to his high skill with woodworking, it is possible that Ebenezer built this home himself for his family, down to the segmental pediment over the front door. The house has been maintained very well, and even retains historic wood windows.
This is such a great house. I have owned it for 13 years. The interior has many of the original architectural details still in tact. Plaster walls and ceilings, interior doors, door hardware, fireplaces, floors, trim, crown moldings, interior window shutters, stairways, windows, and room layout is just about how it was when it was built. Even most of the exterior siding seems to be original, along with all the wooden pegged windows.. 6 fireplaces are all original and the exterior of the center chimney was restored in the 1980’s. There were some structural repairs made to the first floor joists and sills along with some basement granite stone stabilizations in the 1980’s. This house is solid and is a great representation of an early Portsmouth home from the late 1700’s…When we bought this antique we replaced electical, plumbing, and HVAC and tried our hardest not to change any of the original features. We succeeded.. This house has been saved for future generations… Hopefully the next owner appreciate its originality as much as we do…
