Dudley W. Davis House // c.1900

Dudley William Davis (1857-1942) was born in Quebec, Canada and eventually moved to the United States, graduating from Bates College and settling in the border town of Derby, Vermont. Here, he engaged in business and became the cashier, and eventual President of the Derby Line National Bank (featured previously). His success in banking afforded him the ability to purchase a house lot on high ground in town, and he had this large home built. Clad with wood shingle siding and a prominent cross-gambrel roof, the house retains much of its original architectural integrity.

Interestingly, there was a Dudley H. Davis who was president of the Merchants Bank in Vermont for many years.

Just a few more details about Mr. D. W. Davis, he was born in Coaticook, Quebec (about 23 miles northeast of Derby Line) and went to the local school, then to Stanstead College (just across the border). Following graduation, he went to Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, for two years, then to Victoria College, Cobourg, Ontario, where he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1878. He taught English, Economics and Math at Bugbee House in Stanstead College for a few years, then he was principal of Hatley Academy for a year, a post he resigned to join the National Bank of Derby Line, Vt., in 1887.
