Central Hall // c.1885

Located next door to the former High School (now the Town Hall) of Stonington, this mansard-roofed commercial building on Main Street is a prototypical example of late 19th century mixed-use architecture seen all over Maine. This building was constructed in the 1880s and known as Central Hall. The building contained retail spaces at the ground floor and tenement housing in the upper floors for workers at local granite quarries. The building is well-preserved and an important contributing building to the working village of Stonington.

Maine State Building // 1893

The Maine State Building is a one-of-a-kind landmark located in the Poland Springs Historic District of Poland, Maine, though it was not originally built in this location! The Victorian structure was built in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago (aka the Chicago World’s Fair) as one of the State Buildings constructed by each U.S. state to highlight their history. Designed by Chicago architect Charles Sumner Frost, a Lewiston, Maine native and MIT graduate, the building was constructed of granite with a slate roof. After the close of the fair, the Ricker family of Poland Spring, purchased the building from the state. They had it dismantled, moved to Maine, and rebuilt on their resort, which brought even more visitors to their property. In Maine, it reopened in 1895 as a library and art gallery for their hotel guests. Along with the Norway Building in Norway, The Dutch House in Brookline (a personal favorite), the Palace of Fine Arts (now the Museum of Science and Industry) and World Congress Auxiliary Building (now the Art Institute of Chicago) in Chicago, the Maine State Building is one of the few remaining buildings from the 1893 World’s Fair, and the only State Building remaining. It has been lovingly preserved and operated by the Poland Spring Historical Society, who operate the building as a museum.

Sabbathday Lake Shaker Meetinghouse // 1794

The last active Shaker community in the world can be found in New Gloucester, Maine. The Shakers migrated to Colonial America in 1774 in pursuit of religious freedom and developed from the religious group called the Quakers, which originated in the 17th century. Both groups believed that everybody could find God within him or herself, rather than through clergy or rituals, but the Shakers tended to be more emotional and demonstrative in their worship. Shakers also believed that their lives should be dedicated to pursuing perfection, continuously confessing their sins, and attempting a cessation of sinning, including sex and marriage. They built 19 communal settlements (so far I have featured two: Enfield Shaker Village and Canterbury Shaker Village) that attracted some 20,000 converts over the next century and maintained their numbers through conversion and adoption of orphans, numbers which have dropped to just three active members in 2024! The Sabbathday Lake community was established in 1782 and grew to a size of 1,900 acres with 26 large buildings by 1850. This building, the Shaker’s meetinghouse, was built in 1794 with all materials and labor supplied by the community. The small but significant structure remains a landmark in the community and is occasionally open for tours.

Dixmont Corner Church // 1834

Dixmont, a small rural town in central Maine was originally originally a land grant by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (of which Maine was then a part) to Bowdoin College, which sold the first settlers their land for profit to build on their campus. As a result, the town was originally called “Collegetown”, which was obviously short-lived. Dr. Elijah Dix (1747-1809) of Boston, who never lived there but took an interest in its settlement, encouraged others to settle there, and when the town was officially incorporated in 1807, it named itself after Dix, as Dixmont. A “malignant fever” broke out among the settlers in the early years, also killing Elijah Dix while in Dixmont on a trip there in 1809, he was buried in the Dixmont Corner Cemetery. Elijah was the grandfather of reformer and nurse Dorothea Dix. The early settlers had this church built by 1834 by Rowland Tyler, a local master builder whose only other documented work is the 1812 City Hall of Bangor. The Dixmont Corner Church is one of Penobscot County’s oldest Gothic churches and also exhibits some Greek/Classical elements.

Pendleton House // 1826

Large commercial blocks like this can really transport you back a century or more! The Pendleton House in Blue Hill, Maine was built in 1826 by Jonah and Jeremiah Holt. The brothers were born in Beverly, Massachusetts and their family settled in Blue Hill, likely to work in the shipbuilding industry. Originally called the Brick Block, the building was a storefront for the Holts. In the 1870s, the building had fallen into disrepair, and was seized from its owner, Frederick Holt (Jeremiah’s son), by the Blue Hill Academy, from whom Nathan Pendleton purchased the building. As an 1877 issue of The Ellsworth American stated: “Blue Hill needs a hotel. There have never been so many strangers and visitors. Five hundred men are working in the quarries.” From the massive demand for lodging in town, tied to industry, Pendleton opened the building as a hotel in 1878, possibly adding the mansard roof at that time. The building became known as the Pendleton House for a number of years and was purchased by John M. Snow in 1888, who added porches to the building. Sadly, the porches were removed in the 20th century, but the old Pendleton House remains a fixture in Blue Hill and is home to small businesses with housing above.

Sargentville Chapel // 1889

The Sargentville Chapel in Sedgwick, Maine was built in 1889 to provide a more convenient site for services, meetings and other community activities for residents of the Sargentville Village in town, a distance from Sedgwick’s main village. A building committee was established with the goal to erect a new chapel, and A.J. Long, a lumber manufacturer and builder submitted the lowest bid of $1,100 to “put up the building, finish the outside, and put on one coat of paint”. The offer was accepted and the first meeting in the chapel took place in January. 1890. The small chapel has been an active community space for members of the Sargentville section of Sedgwick since the late 19th century and the group continues to maintain the Victorian Gothic building extremely well to this day.
