Eisemann Mansion // 1905

Among the area’s best examples of a high-style Colonial Revival residence of the early 20th century, the Eisemann Mansion on Monmouth Street in Brookline’s Longwood neighborhood stands out not only for its scale and massing, but unique architectural details. The dwelling was built in 1905 for Selly and Albert Eisemann, both German-born Jews who immigrated to the United States and originally lived in New Mexico before moving to Brookline in their retirement. Albert was a retired wool merchant, and clearly made a name for himself out west, hiring local architect, James Templeton Kelley, to furnish plans for his large mansion in Longwood. With a boxy form and five bay facade (with six smaller windows at the third floor), the center-hall mansion is notable for its elaborate first-floor windows with individual cornices, recessed entry set between Ionic columns, and recessed niche balcony over the entry as a unique interpretation of a Palladian motif. 

McInnes-Morse House // 1901

Located at the corner of Borland and Chatham streets in Brookline’s historic Longwood neighborhood, the McInnes-Morse House stands as one of the area’s finest and stately Colonial Revival style homes. The three-story residence contains a three-bay main block with two-story side wings and central entrance. A rusticated first floor is surmounted by clapboarded walls above with two-story fluted pilasters dividing the bays and a central Palladian window. The facade is further embellished with dentilled cornice and egg-and-dart mouldings. The residence was completed in 1901 for Edwin G. McInnes, a lawyer, and his wife, Mabel, who split their time between this home and a residence in Manchester-by-the-Sea. The second owners were Theresa J. Morse and her husband, Alan. Theresa worked full-time at the regional office of the War Labor Board in wage control, processing cases involving the metal trades and wartime industries. After the war, she became active in the League of Women Voters and was appointed to the Brookline Housing Authority, where she advocated for smaller-scale public housing integrated with social services. The residence remains well-preserved and commands this prominent corner across from the Longwood Mall. I could not locate the architect for the home, but would love to find out!

Isaac Gleason House // 1805

Built in 1805 by Isaac Gleason (Glezen), this Federal style mansion was later expanded in the early 20th century in the Colonial Revival style as Wayland became more of a wealthy Boston suburb. Located on the appropriately named Glezen Lane, this house was constructed for Isaac Glezen (1769-1843), who farmed the land here. Other family members built homes nearby. As Wayland shifted from rural community to a wealthy Boston suburb in the early 20th century, the property was purchased by Charles Ashley Hardy and his wife, Alice. The couple would sell the property in 1918, which comprised of 89-acres of land and a chauffeur’s residence, was purchased by Albert H. Beck, a New York banker. The property was later subdivided and consists of many other large, single-family homes.

Nathaniel Thayer Mansion // 1902

The Thayer Family is one of the most prominent and well-connected families of New England, and that stature comes with handsome estates. Nathaniel Thayer (1801-1883) was born in Lancaster as the son of Reverend Nathaniel Thayer (1769–1840), a Unitarian congregational minister. Nathaniel Thayer Jr. made his fortune in businesses and held deep ties to his hometown, despite spending most of his time in Boston. He took down the original Thayer home on this site and developed the estate in the 1850s. After his death, the property was inherited by his son, Nathaniel Thayer III (1851-1911), and the house was enlarged and remodeled in the Georgian Revival style in 1902 by the architect and interior designer Ogden Codman Jr. The mansion served as a summer home to Nathaniel, who too spent much of his time in Boston. After his death, the 46-room mansion was sold out of the Thayer family with many of its furnishings sold at auction. The Nathaniel Thayer Mansion house was sold to Atlantic Union College in 1943 at a cost of $12,500. It was used as the school’s administration building between 1945 and 1951, and then as a dormitory until about 1970. From 1973 to present-day, the estate has been home to Thayer Conservatory, Center for Music and the Arts, who do a great job at preserving this significant landmark.

Bessie & Murray Potter House // 1909

Murray A. Potter (1871-1915) and his wife, Bessie Lincoln Potter lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Murray worked as a Professor of Romance Languages at Harvard College. The couple spent summers in Lancaster, Massachusetts, where they would purchase a house in 1909 that was built just a decade or so earlier. The couple were said to be big fans of history and decided to make their house resemble the 1782 Pierce-Nichols House in Salem, having the brown shingle Victorian house “modernized” in the current three-story near-symmetrical form.

Briggs-Lyman House // 1903

Built in 1903 for Walter Briggs, this stately Colonial Revival style residence showcases the bold proportions and scale of the style. Located on Euston Street in the Cottage Farm neighborhood, this house was designed by Walter H. Kilham of the firm, Kilham & Hopkins, who specialized in large, suburban homes in the Boston area during the early decades of the 20th century. The symmetrical facade includes a projecting center vestibule, an arched window with blind fan above, bold window trim, and a shallow hip roof broken by two pedimented dormers. The house is so special that it was featured in a 1909 publication highlighting 100 country houses of various styles of the United States.

Charles H. Owens House // 1906

This stately house on Powell Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, was built in 1906 for Charles H. Owens, Jr., and his wife, Nellie. Charles was a “house decorator”, who built the house next door just two years earlier before moving into this larger home in 1906. Both houses were designed by the architectural firm of Loring & Phipps, who Owens likely collaborated on commissions with in his career. The house is 2 1/2-stories with a shallow hip roof and is an excellent example of an academic interpretation of the Colonial Revival style. The principal facade has flush board siding with round-arched windows on the first floor along with a squat fanlight transom over the center entrance.

“The Pillars” // c.1780

Renovated in the early 20th century from a Federal style farmhouse, “The Pillars” in Canterbury, Connecticut, is an extravagant example of a Colonial Revival style residence in this quiet part of the state. The Pillars was the creation of Frank Edwin Miller (1856-1947) and his wife, Hattie Jenks Miller. The Miller’s retired here in 1913 after Hattie inherited the family homestead, which dated to the late 18th century, and they had the home renovated, adding the massive two-story columned porch and projecting entry. The house is a visual representation of the difference between Colonial and Colonial Revival styles as this home, the latter example, is a free interpretation of its prototype with exaggerated architectural details in a scale not seen centuries earlier.

Samuel B. Conant House // 1895

Built in 1895 for Samuel Conant, president of a Pawtucket printing firm, this stately residence is one of the finest Colonial Revival houses in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Designed by the Providence architectural firm of Stone, Carpenter & Willson, the house is brick on the first floor with clapboard siding above. The Contant house has a gambrel roof punctuated by several gable dormers. The main facade has two symmetrical round bays, which rise to the roof and are topped by low balustrades. A single-story porch extends between the center points of these bays, and is also topped by a low balustrade. Recognized for its architectural grandeur (inside and out), the house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Conant House is now used as a nursing home and while the transition to this new use has required a number of interior alterations, these changes have been made with sympathy for the character of the house and many of them are reversible.

John E. Calhoun House // c.1912

This site, in the heart of Cornwall village, was once occupied by an early 19th century Federal style residence, built by the wealthy Pierce family in town. The Pierces’ large home was acquired by John E. Calhoun (1859-1940), a successful New York businessman, who retreated to his father’s hometown for summers away from the city. In 1911, a fire destroyed the home, which was wood-frame construction. This event mobilized Mr. Calhoun, who was untrained but interested in architecture, to begin planning a new summer residence, but of fireproof construction. Calhoun is said to have designed (and funded) the town’s library just years before, and modeled his home in line with the Colonial-era residences in the village, just larger and of brick. From the 1950s through the 1990s, the house was occupied by the headmaster and administration of the local Marvelwood School, but was re-established as a private home, a use that remains today.
