Standing at the corner of Custom House and Weybosset streets in Providence, the Equitable Building is architecturally significant as one of the only two buildings downtown with a cast-iron facade. Built in 1872, this Victorian Gothic commercial building with truncated corner, was constructed for the Equitable Fire and Mutual Insurance Company by local architect, William R. Walker, who designed many of Rhode Island’s great houses and buildings in the late 19th century. The iconic cast-iron facade was fabricated by Builder’s Iron Foundry, a local manufacturer of iron architectural elements, stoves, machinery and more. For the Equitable Building, the company created the facade with cast-iron colonettes with foliated capitals which characterizes the building today.

This unique two-story commercial building at the corner of Westminster and Snow streets in Downtown Providence is a rare example of a surviving Art Deco style luncheon built in the interwar period in American cities. The building was constructed around 1933 for Gibson’s Incorporated, which was established as a cigar, soda, and candy store, later opening a number of luncheons with soda fountains and food options. For its Downtown location, the company built this handsome structure, with an Art Deco facade with large plate glass windows, ceramic moldings, and painted terra cotta panels. Today, the building is home to Charette Charter High School.

The Conrad Building on Westminster Street in Downtown Providence is an ornate and over-the-top masterpiece designed by one of the city’s premier architectural firms for an eccentric owner. Erected by Jerothmul Bowers Barnaby (1830-1889), a self made millionaire, commonly known as “Rhode Island’s Clothing Prince” who owned manufacturing plants for clothing throughout the city, the building was named after his son-in-law, John H. Conrad. Owner, J. B. Barnaby, lived in an eclectic mansion on Broadway, known as Barnaby’s Castle, which was designed by the firm of Stone, Carpenter & Willson, like this commercial block built as an investment in 1885. Originally used for professional offices, the structure had long been occupied as artist and photography studios on the upper floors. Eclectic in style, the Conrad Building blends Queen Anne, Romanesque Revival, and Moorish Revival styles into a single composition, with a four-story cast-iron tower at the corner capped by a Moorish ogival dome, panel brickwork, round arched windows and recessed openings, projecting bays, cast-iron storefronts, and an oversized arch with its name, “Conrad Building”, ornamental carvings, and the initials “J. B.” for its owner, all completed in brownstone.

Studley Building // 1894

Designed by local architect George Waterman Cady, this handsome six-story commercial block on Weybosset Street in Downtown Providence, is an excellent and well-preserved example of the Romanesque Revival style popular in such structures at the end of the 19th century in New England. The building was constructed in 1894 for owner, George Henry Darling (1827-1897), a Civil War veteran and Principal in T. Curtis & Company, brush makers, as an office building as an investment. The light brick facade is decorated with a two-story columned storefront with large plate glass windows, paired round-head windows on the fifth floor, a heavy modilllon cornice and brownstone trim detail. The building was recently renovated in 2023 and converted into apartments by Paolino Properties.

Tilden-Thurber Building // 1895

The ornately ornamented Tilden-Thurber Building sits on Westminster Street in Downtown Providence, and served as somewhat of a jewel box for its original owners, the Tilden-Thurber Company. Tilden-Thurber was a prominent 19th- and 20th-century luxury goods retailer, jeweler, and silversmith, founded in 1856 by Henry Tilden and William Thurber, retailing fine timepieces, custom silverware, decorative art, and commemorative items. The company had its main store at the corner of Westminster and Mathewson streets built in 1895 from plans by the Boston architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, which resulted in this immaculate, four-story masonry block. Classically inspired, the design features large plate glass storefronts framed by an intricate carved stone surround at the street level and on the upper floors, colossal engaged and rusticated columns. The Tilden-Thurber Company filed for bankruptcy in 1991 and the future of this landmark was uncertain for years until the building sold in 2016 to former mayor and longtime developer Joseph Paolino.

An iconic building in Downtown Providence, the aptly named Turk’s Head Building, stands at a prominent site at the intersection of Weybosset and Westminster streets. The flatiron building was built in 1913 by the Brown family as an investment property, replacing a series of small early 19th century commercial buildings on the site. One of the original buildings on the site was owned by shopkeeper, Jacob Whitman, who mounted a ship’s figurehead above his store depicting the head of an Ottoman warrior. His store was called, “At the sign of the Turk’s Head.” When the Brown family redeveloped the site, they worked with the New York architectural firm of Howells & Stokes, who designed the new skyscraper of white brick with stone trim and a massive Turk’s head at the center of the curved facade, reminiscent of the site’s history and original figurehead metaphorically on the new building’s “prow”. The building has served as an important visual landmark to those entering Downtown from the East Side/College Hill area.

Old Stone Bank Tower // 1969

Believe it or not, this 23-story reinforced-concrete tower in Downtown Providence, Rhode Island, was designed by the same firm as the Empire State Building in New York City! The Old Stone Bank Tower (now known as Textron Tower for its largest tenant) was designed in 1969 and completed in 1972 from plans by the New York architectural firm of Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, as the new headquarters and offices for the Old Stone Bank in Providence. The bank was originally located in a stately stone building nearby on South Main Street, before expanding operations into this new skyscraper, the fifth tallest in Rhode Island. The exterior of the tower is formed by a grid of aggregate concrete containing deeply recessed, dark windows inside. At the street, the tower sits elevated behind a podium of marble, harming its street condition. Architecturally, the break in the grid for the exposed corners is a nice touch, and while some say the building is “reminiscent of prison architecture”, I feel that there are much worse examples of architecture. Case-Mead Building // 1859

Originally built in 1859 as a four-story building, this commercial block on Dorrance Street in Downtown Providence was updated in the early 20th century in its present appearance. The Case-Mead Building is brick construction and was designed in the Italianate style, notable for its round arched windows. When built, the present third and fourth stories were a double-height Infantry Hall for Rhode Island’s First Light Infantry Regiment, and hosted dances and lectures until they moved to a larger building on South Main Street in the 1870s. The building was renovated in 1906 in the Renaissance Revival style, with a full floor created from the former two-story meeting hall and the primary facades clad with stucco and new trim added. The building recently housed offices, but was renovated in 2017 into housing, creating 44 apartments with funding from State Historic Tax Credits, Rebuild Rhode Island Tax Credits, and private funding.

Grace Episcopal Church, Providence // 1846

Grace Episcopal Church has anchored the corner of Westminster and Mathewson Streets in Downtown Providence since it was completed in 1846. The congregation was founded in 1829 by some of the parishioners of St. John’s Episcopal Church on the East Side of Providence, at a period that the west side of the Providence River began to develop in earnest. The new parish had little money and managed to buy the old Providence Theatre, on the site Grace Church occupies today. The building was purchased and remodeled for $6,000, a large sum in those days, and converted into a church. Over a decade later, the growing parish had funding to erect a more permanent and suitable building. They hired one of the most well-respected architects in the country, Richard Upjohn, to design their new house of worship, which resulted in what is believed to be the first asymmetrical Gothic Revival church in America. In 1912, the firm of Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson deepened the chancel and added a parish house, extending Upjohn’s original design without disrupting it, and the church’s four-level tower and masonry spire still command the prominent corner in Downtown Providence today.

The Victorian Gothic style Richmond Building on Weybosset Street in Downtown Providence, is one of the more interesting late 19th century commercial buildings in the city, as the more you look at it, the more you notice! The Richmond Building was constructed in 1876 seemingly as an investment for Dr. Fenner Harris Peckham, who rented out professional offices and retail space inside the building. The structure gets its name from its proximity to Richmond Street, and stands out architecturally for its polychromatic brick with tile, Gothic-arch niche flanked by colonettes on the facade, and truncated corner with later rounded corner window.

On Weybosset Street in Downtown Providence, stands the facade of a building that tells the story of the city. The Providence National Bank originally opened in 1791 as one of just five banks in the country. The longtime home of the institution, the 1774 Joseph Brown House was outgrown and following a merger with the Merchants National Bank, the company elected to build a new headquarters. Constructed in 1929 on the site of the old Lyceum Building on Westminster Street, the Providence National Bank Building was designed by the local firm Howe & Church in a stately Colonial Revival style. The bank merged with the Union Trust and again expanded its facilities with a 1951 addition with frontage on Weybosset Street, the last remaining piece of the structure. Designed in the Colonial Revival style, the Weybosset elevation is five bays wide with a projecting central pavilion, quoined corners, and splayed keystone window lintels beneath a broad entablature. The bank itself passed through several names and owners over the decades, but the building’s real trouble began in 2005, when the Westminster Street portion was razed to clear the way for a proposed condominium tower that was never built, leaving behind a surface parking lot. Only the Weybosset Street facade survived, propped up on rusting steel beams for years and nearly slated for demolition in 2009 before preservation advocates and the Mayor’s office intervened. The site is a reminder to disallow demolition until a financed and permitted project is approved.

The Westminster Arcade, also known as the Providence Arcade, in Downtown Providence, was built in 1828 as the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States. Built in 1828, the Arcade extends a full block between Westminster and Weybosset streets and is a landmark early example of the Greek Revival style. The Arcade was designed by architect, Russell Warren who collaborated with Tallman & Bucklin on the design, who were likely inspired by early shopping arcades in Europe. When the granite building opened, the mall featured three floors of shops, each designed around the central promenade illuminated by skylights in the ceiling, which provided illumination until the incorporation of electric light, which in this sense, is strikingly similar to the modern shopping malls of the mid-to-late 1900s. As suburbanization and retail shopping struggles post-WWII occurred in Downtown Providence, the Arcade experienced high tenant turnover, with the upper floors particularly struggling to attract businesses. After various restorations of the National Historic Landmark, the building reopened in 2013 with office and retail spaces on the ground floor and 48 affordable apartments on the upper two stories, providing an innovative mixed-use way to preserve and fund this important building.

A very late example of a Second Empire style commercial block, the Earle Building on Washington Street in Downtown Providence stands as a handsome addition to the urban environment with its human scale and high-quality design. The building is said to have been built by William H. Earle with retail storefronts at the street with offices above. William Earle was a partner in the company, Earle & Prew, an express mailing company (similar to Fedex today). The relatively simple massing is broken up by two-story projecting oriel bays.

Do you remember Shepard’s Department Store?


At the corner of Westminster and Union Streets in Downtown Providence stands the Shepard Company Building, a hulking reminder of the late 19th and early 20th century dominance of the department store and the American downtown as a retail destination. The company opened in 1880 in a modest 6,400-square-foot storefront, and saw immediate success, eventually occupying an entire city block. The company grew piecemeal into neighboring buildings between 1880-1903 when the entire 300,000+ square foot block was completed from plans by Martin & Hall, architects. Architecturally, the building tells its own history in layers: it started as a modest three-story Italianate structure, and later additions brought two-story arched entrances angled into the corners at Westminster and Union, and Washington and Union, that once lured shoppers inside to terrazzo floors with a sea of merchandise. Outside, a freestanding cast-iron clock became a beloved meeting point, with generations of Rhode Islanders arranging to gather “at the clock”. A massive fire in March 1923, caused over one million dollars’ worth of damage, but the structure was restored under Hall’s supervision. Shepard’s closed in 1974 and remained vacant for almost 20 years. After advocacy from preservationists, the building was bought by the State of Rhode Island and was rehabilitated by David Presbrey, the building is now the location of the Providence Campus of the University of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Department of Education, and other state offices and education-related facilities.

The Merchants Bank Building on Westminster Street at the edge of Downtown Providence, is a rare surviving mid-19th century commercial block that survived periods of commercialization, urban renewal and eventual rebirth of this iconic New England city. The Italianate style, six-story flatiron building is sheathed in brownstone and was designed by architects Alpheus C. Morse and Clifton A. Hall as one of the first buildings in Providence’s financial district, which today is comprised of much larger modern skyscrapers. The handsome structure was built for the Merchants Bank, a financial institution that had been organized in February 1818 and was reorganized as a national bank in 1865. Royal C. Taft, governor of Rhode Island, was president of the bank for forty years, from 1868 to 1908. In May 1926 the Merchants National Bank merged with the Providence National Bank, with the combined institution taking the name of the Providence National Bank, but they moved into this building until they completed a new building in 1930. Since then, the building has been home to professional offices, and remains a well-preserved early banking building in Providence.
