Aaron Fisher House // 1805

The Aaron Fisher House on North Main Street in Sharon, Massachusetts, has stood over 220 years as the town’s finest example of Federal style residential architecture. The residence was built for Aaron Fisher (1762-1809) who is said to have had the house built of brick that was brought over to the United States from England as ballast on a ship and later made its way to Sharon for use as walls of this stately house. While the brick is slight different color than many other local bricks, this may be another example of an urban legend. In the mid-19th century, the house was modernized with an entry porch and brackets at the cornice, and is said to have been painted yellow. Luckily for us, the porch and paint have since been removed and the 1805 house shines once again on the town’s Main Street.

Mann’s Cotton Mill Double House // 1831

Located on the aptly named Mann’s Hill Road in Sharon, Massachusetts, this historic double-house was built in 1831 as worker’s housing affiliated with the former Mann’s Cotton Mill. The first Mann’s Cotton Mill was constructed in 1831 by George Harvey Mann on Devil’s Brook on the East Branch of the Neponset River. George Harvey Mann (1793-1847) bought the water privileges from Joseph Warren Revere, the son of Paul Revere, and built a factory. The business carried on until a fire in 1840 destroyed the factory and it was rebuilt by George and his son, George Rodney Mann. As part of the original mill complex in 1831, a series of double-houses were built nearby for workers at the mill, making them always available for long days at work. The Mann’s Mill closed in 1900, and it was destroyed by fire in 1919. The double-houses like the one seen here, were sold by the heirs of the family at the turn of the 20th century and feature a stone base and wood frame second floor. 

Hotchkiss-Shoninger House // 1854

The Hotchkiss-Shoninger House on Chapel Street in New Haven’s Wooster Square district is one of three residences in a row developed and designed by the duo of architect, Henry Austin, and lumber dealer/developer, Nelson Hotchkiss. The finest of the three residences, this house, was built in 1854 and features a double bow-front facade, brick walls covered in stucco, and ornate two-story central porch with brackets and colonettes. Nelson Hotchkiss moved into this home from his first Austin-designed house and resided here for a number of years before moving back to the first home again. The second owner Frederick Betts, was an insurance commissioner, and in the late 19th century and early 20th century, the home was owned by Bernard Shoninger, a German-born, Jewish organ maker.

Nelson Hotchkiss House // 1850

Nelson Hotchkiss was a New Haven lumber dealer and developer in the Wooster Square district and had this stately home on Chapel Street built for his family. While the architect is not confirmed, it is probable that the residence (along with neighboring homes also developed by Hotchkiss) was the work of Henry Austin, who partnered with Hotchkiss on developments in New Haven and Trenton, New Jersey. The Nelson Hotchkiss House was built in 1850 and is an excellent example of Italianate style with boxy form, broad overhanging eaves, brick walls covered with stucco and Austin’s signature Greek Doric columns with fluted shafts and foliate capitals. The house maintains a window hood over the upper floor window with delicate carved wood bargeboard.

Bromley-Bradley House // c.1850

One of the eclectic mid-19th century residences in New Haven’s Wooster Square neighborhood is the Bromley House, an exuberant blending of architectural styles that have been lovingly preserved. The history is a little murky on this residence but from research, the home was built around 1850 and was possibly a two-story flat-roofed Italianate style design with three-bay facade and off-center entrance. The home was acquired by Joseph Bromley, who appears to have added a third-story with gable roof. After the Civil War, the property was purchased by Lyman Erving Bradley, a veteran of the war who was employed as a police officer and later as private security for an area factory. It appears that Mr. Bradley, before his death in 1901, had the property expanded with a whimsical front porch, three-story side addition, and applied ornament in the Queen Anne style. The home is today a three-unit condominium, similar to the three-deckers found in cities all over New England.

Max Adler House // 1879

The Max Adler House on Greene Street in New Haven’s Wooster Square neighborhood is a flamboyant example of Victorian-era residential architecture that is hard to classify as an architectural style. The residence was constructed in 1879 for Max Adler (1841-1916) a German-born Jewish immigrant who grew up in New Haven and became a leader in industry at a young age. Max founded the Strouse & Adler Corset Company, which is said to be the first corset factory in the United States. The company did very well and he was able to erect this residence overlooking Wooster Square park for his family. Architecturally, the house has a mansard style roof, a feature of the Second Empire style; applied stickwork in the wooden bays, porch and dormers, a feature of the Stick style; and embroidered panel brickwork and terra cotta, elements of the emerging Queen Anne style. The Adler House has been lovingly preserved and is one of New Haven’s finest Victorian-era residences.

Kentuck Farm // c.1740

Located on West Street in the rural part of Wrentham, Massachusetts, this historic farmhouse is among the finest homes in the community. Early records are sparse, but the dwelling appears to have been built in the first half of the 18th century by Joseph Grant and later expanded and inherited by other members of the Grant Family who owned the property in the mid-19th century and other nearby farms. Through the 19th century, the farm was owned by George Grant and later by his son, Charles Albert Grant. In the 20th century, the farm was owned by Wentworth and Anne Massie, who operated the property as an apple orchard, known as Kentuck Farm. The home has been restored by current owners and retains its large, central chimney, classical door surround, siding and windows.

Eben S. Draper Mansion // 1926

Built in 1926 for Eben Sumner Draper Jr. (1893-1959), the son of Massachusetts Governor and Draper Corporation executive, Eben Sumner Draper, this massive Tudor Revival style mansion in Hopedale, provided a secluded country estate for the wealthy industrialist. The home was designed in 1926 by Boston architects Bigelow & Wadsworth, and replaced Eben’s father’s Shingle style country mansion “The Ledges“. The new Draper mansion was highlighted in numerous architectural magazines shortly after it’s construction, which highlighted the amazing brickwork, layout, and interior finishes, all of which remain to today! This spectacular home is over 14,000 square feet and has 17 bedrooms, several located in the staff wing, 10 full-baths and four half-baths, an in-ground swimming pool, gazebo, tennis court, and landscape design attributed to the notable landscape architect Warren Manning. In the 1960s, the home sold out of the family and was used as a home for adults living with developmental disabilities, mental illnesses, physical disabilities, the facility has since sold the Draper mansion and occupies the former carriage house on the grounds.

Dr. Byron Brown House // c.1930

Dr. Byron Freeman Brown (1902-1962) was born in Maine and was educated at Bowdoin College before moving to Boston for medical school. After he graduated, he married and accepted a position as a doctor at Milford Hospital, not far from Hopedale, Massachusetts. Dr. Brown and his wife, Veronica, had this cottage on Adin Street built around 1930. Distinguished by its stone veneer walls and steeply pitched red clay tile roof punctuated by dormers and symmetrical facade, the Dr. Brown House is a great example of a Colonial Revival style house with Arts and Crafts flair built in the inter-war period.

Smith-Waterman House // c.1820

One of the many great examples of Federal period houses being “Victorianized” later in the 19th century, the Smith-Waterman House on Broad Street in Warren, Rhode Island, stands out as one of the most elaborate. The residence was originally built by 1820 and possibly owned by Nathaniel P. Smith (1799-1872). After his death, the house was inherited by his son, N. P. Smith Jr., who would later sell the property to John Waterman, the Manager and Treasurer of the Warren Manufacturing Company. It was under Mr. Waterman’s ownership that the once standard Federal style house was enlarged and given Italianate features, including the wrap-around porch, overhanging eaves with brackets, addition and the three-story tower at the rear.

Hoar-Hall House // c.1770

This stately two-story, five-bay Colonial house at 172 Water Street in Warren, Rhode Island, is significant as a well-preserved Georgian style residence that has connections to a prominent local family. It is unclear who originally owned the residence, but by the mid-19th century, the property was owned by John C. Hoar, a blockmaker for the maritime trade. Passed through members of the Hoar family into the mid-19″ century, owned by John Champlain Hall (1818-1912), the son of John C. Hoar, who actually changed his last name from Hoar to Hall in 1867, but it is unclear why. John C. Hall worked as a carpenter and builder in town, building homes and commercial buildings for area residents, including his own shop nearby.

Burr-Eddy-Peck House // c.1786

This Federal style residence on Main Street in Warren, Rhode Island, features one of the town’s most spectacular entries, likely dates to the 1780s and exhibits later alterations. The house was originally owned by Rufus and Anna Burr, and was possibly built following their marriage in 1786. The late 18th century front entrance is one of Warren’s most elaborate examples with fluted Ionic pilasters supporting embellished frieze blocks, above which the pediment rests and contains a elli[tical fanlight transom. In the 19th century, the property was owned by James Maxwell Eddy (1811-1901), who, after the Civil War, elongated the southernmost bay on the facade, adding a bay window on the side which ties into the roofline with a half-hipped connector. In the 20th century, this was the home of illustrator Henry Jarvis Peck 1880-1967, whose work was re gularly published in Colliers, Harper’s Weekly, Ladies Home Journal, and other prominent magazines. The shingle siding was likely added in the first half of the 20th century.

Judge Samuel and Patty Randall House // 1809

This stately three-story Federal style mansion on Baker Street in the lovely town of Warren, Rhode Island, was built in 1809 as a gift from a father to his daughter as a wedding gift. The house was funded by James Maxwell, of the local family of merchants and slave traders, for his daughter Martha “Patty” Maxwell and her soon-to-be husband, Samuel Randall. Judge Randall operated a school in town and published three local newspapers, the Telescope, the Clarion, and the Telegraph, all rather short-lived. In 1822, he was appointed judge of the court of common pleas for Bristol County, Rhode Island, and served in that capacity until 1824, when he was made justice of the supreme court of the state. The pop of color at the entry and the bracketed, Victorian era door hood complete the facade to give it some serious curb-appeal.

Caleb Carr Tavern // c.1760

This house, located on Water Street in Warren, Rhode Island, is said to have been built in the 1760s, but its present appearance in the Federal style is credited to owner, Caleb Carr (1768-1853). In around 1790, Caleb fully renovated the property in the Federal style for his residence and as a tavern, with an elegant fanlighted door put on each facade—one for household use, the other for tavern customers. The property was inherited by his son, Captain Caleb Carr Jr., who continued as a tavern owner, but was also an important shipbuilder and operator of the ferry to Barrington, which docked at the end of the street. The Carr Tavern is today covered with later aluminum siding and has Victorian-era two-over-two windows but if restored, would shine as one of the best Federal style homes in town!

Elizabeth G. Evans – Edward A. Filene House // 1883

This unique brick house at 12 Otis Place in Beacon Hill was built in 1883 by the architect, Carl Fehmer for attorney Glendower Evans and his wife, Elizabeth Gardiner. Mr. Evans died in 1886 of Hodgkin’s Disease at just 30 years of age. His widow, Elizabeth Glendower Evans (1856-1937) was greatly influenced by her husband during their brief marriage, even taking her husband’s first name as her middle name after his death. Elizabeth Glendower Evans became a prominent social activist, studying child labor conditions in the South and took up the cause of women’s suffrage and the associated problems of tenements and factory work arising from disenfranchisement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1915 Evans served as a delegate to the International Congress of Women at the Hague. She was the first National Organizer of the Woman’s Peace Party. From 1920 until 1937 she served as a national director of the American Civil Liberties Union. In the 1910s, Elizabeth sold the home to Edward Albert Filene (1860-1937), who, together with his younger brother Abraham Lincoln Filene, reorganized his father’s department store into “William Filene’s Sons Company”, which would later become Filene’s. He was a supporter of credit unions to help ordinary American workers to access loans at reasonable rates and allow workers to save their money so that when hard times hit, they were prepared.
